dc.description.abstract | This qualitative descriptive study explores the difficulties of elementary students in applying
strategies in solving math non-routine problems. These grade 6 pupils from a public school in
Davao City, Philippines are purposively selected to participate in the study. Tasked-based
interview reveals that the difficulties common to students are understanding the problem and
selecting a specific strategy to obtain the answer. Pedagogical implications are discussed such as
using manipulative materials that are used for visual learners by showing materials like popsicle
sticks, marbles, play money, blocks, etc. to support their mathematical learning, also, through
games that have mathematical concept, which can also help students to be interested in
mathematics.
