The importance of interpersonal communication skills in dealing with client in social work practice

The purpose of the study was to know the difficulties and coping strategies that social workers regularly encounter when dealing with clients. The researchers conducted their study using a phenomenological approach. Seven participants with at least six months of experience as social workers were purposively selected. A one-on-one interview was conducted through online platforms. The researchers identified themes about the difficulties social workers face while dealing with communication issues in their day-to-day roles in society. Throughout the study, themes were extracted are Social Workers' views on the importance of interpersonal communication as vitality in establishing relationships, the necessity to consider verbal and non-verbal cues, the significance of achieving trust, active listening, and understanding, the importance in social work profession. Challenges include dealing with clients’ aggression and demands, addressing cultural diversity and language barriers. Social workers' coping mechanisms include the power of self-reflection and aid of patience and understanding. Lastly, the social workers' insights on interpersonal communication are the need for observation, patience, and understanding, and the importance of facilitating open and effective communication. The study's findings imply that since interpersonal communication affects how practitioners engage and relate to their clients, it significantly impacts practice. A competent social worker must be able to communicate with people and foster trust to be successful. People get the impression that social workers are good communicators, renowned for being understanding and approachable.
