Proficiency of jargon used in DRRM: Basis for strengthening disaster management

Abstract

This study aims to identify proficiency levels in DRRM terminology across 37 barangays, utilizing a structured survey method to collect data. A quantitative survey method was employed to collect data from 37 barangays, using 20 items including five jargon words each related to fire, flood, earthquake, and health. The research focuses on identifying and addressing gaps in the proficiency level of disaster risk reduction and management terminology among local officials in Panabo City, Davao Del Norte. The results showed an overall error rate of 61%, indicating a below-standard performance in DRRM. The study found that the frequency of errors and their corresponding percentages to the various fire, flood, earthquake, and health common jargon words had overall error rates of 59%, 62%, 64%, and 60%, respectively. The study concludes that the proficiency of jargon used in DRRM is below standard, which may lead to ineffective communication and response during disasters. Therefore, the researchers recommend that DRRM members should undergo training and workshops on DRRM, incorporate daily practice of learned terminology, and participate in peer learning groups to improve their understanding and communication of technical terms.
