Abstract
The study was a mixed method using an explanatory sequential approach. This study aimed to assess the efficiency of interpreting English poems in the lexicon problems encountered by 2nd-year English major students at UM Tagum College. It sought to answer the following objectives: (1) to assess the level of lexicon problems of 2nd-year English students in interpreting English poems in terms of accuracy, clarity, and naturalness. In addition, (2) it also seeks to find the answer to the following questions: What are the problems encountered by students, and how did they address lexicon problems in interpreting English poems. As a result of the study, researchers distributed 15-item survey questionnaires to 30 quantitative respondents via Google Docs, while 10 FGD questions were shared with 10 qualitative participants via Google Meet. The results revealed that the level of lexicon problems they encountered was minimal. Furthermore, the majority of the participants used various strategies in interpreting English poems to successfully interpret them. The strategies that are mentioned repeatedly are using context clues and re-reading the text of the poems. According to them, these tactics are very useful in understanding the unfamiliar or metaphorical words used in the poem.
