Exploring the rhetorical devices employed in hugot lines

This study aimed to provide a through description of hugot: its rhetorical devices and purpose in the perceptions of the teens of the academe. Thus, the objective of this study is to identify the rhetorical devices employed in hugot lines and how these affect the perceptions and insights of the students. The Phenomenological approach and Corpus analysis used to conduct this research. We conducted a qualitative research and have interviewed 14 key informants, all of them were senior high school students and currently enrolled at UM Tagum College. Participants were selected based on the students’ level which was considered as a teens. In corpus analysis, we collected 120 text samples of hugot lines for corpora. The criteria for the corpus were selected based on its genre. Triangulations of data were made through the data sources of corpora, in-depth interview and we, the researchers as the third informants. Moreover, the findings were categorized into different essential themes. In addition, through corpus analysis were able to identify the existing devices used in hugot lines, such as simile, metaphor and personification. Moreover, these findings entailed the different rhetorical devices that have been featured on hugot lines and the perception and insights of the students in using hugot lines.
