The purpose of this study is to examine the level of spelling ability, reading fluency, and the relationship of spelling ability and reading fluency. With the three sections of a sectarian school in Agdao, 20 respondents from each section are assessed with an overall of 60 respondents. The researchers obtained the sample using purposive method. Other known contributors to spelling ability are assessed including phonemic awareness and orthographic learning; for reading fluency, aspects assessed are rate, accuracy, and prosody. Mean, standard deviation, and Pearson R are used as the data tool in the study. The result of the study shows that the overall level of the spelling ability of the Grade 9 students is on the high level which is 6.15. This means that students can spell 80-90% of the given words. While in the reading fluency, the overall result of it is 2.14 which indicates that the students are on the average level of their fluency. Therefore, the spelling ability is not correlated with reading fluency. It means that the student’s ability to spell does not reflect on their fluency in reading. These findings have important implications for research and instructions addressing the contributions to the development of reading fluency among struggling readers.
