dc.description.abstract | This paper examines the effects of the extract from the pericarp of Garcinia mangostana as a corrosion inhibitor when mixed with water and hydrochloric acid as binding agents to the physical properties of a grade-40 structural steel. With regards to its appearance, weight, and tensile strength, upon being duly exposed to a corrosive substance and to an open-air environment that imitates the familiar environment where such steels are stored in most construction projects. The data required were gathered by observing the weight differences from the different samples before and after their exposure to the corrosive substance. These were then computed to determine their corrosion rate and degree. To gauge the effects of corrosion on the internal properties of the mild steel, a Universal Testing Machine was used. This test recognizes the difference between the actual ultimate yield stress and the acknowledged average ultimate yield stress of a grade-40 structural steel, equivalent to 280 megaPascals. Although the corrosive substance had noticeable effects on the specimen, such effects were mildly negated by the Garcinia mangostana and hydrochloric acid mixture. Results have suggested that such a mixture can help prolong the shelf-life and preserve its physical properties externally and not internally. Against all the different Garcinia mangostana Corrosion inhibitor concentrations used in this study, the 1g/mL Garcinia mangostana corrosion inhibitor concentration proved the most effective against the corrosive solution and corrosion, in general. Regarding internal damages exhibited by the corrosive solution, in this case, the ultimate yield strength of the grade-40 structural steel, the Garcinia mangostana Corrosion Inhibitor proved ineffective and insignificant when computed through the t-test. | en_US |
