dc.description.abstractCockroaches are known to be associated with ectoparasites that cause food-borne diseases and allergies in food environments such as public markets. Ectoparasites are organisms that are attached to the external body surfaces of hosts. This present study aims to assess the presence of ectoparasites of cockroaches in the selected public markets of Davao City. Specifically, the study aims to identify common cockroach species and extracted cockroach-associated ectoparasites found in Matina and Bankerohan public market. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Findings of the study revealed the following: (a) the common species of cockroaches present in Bankerohan and Matina public market is Periplaneta americana; (b) there is no cockroach associated ectoparasites in Matina public market: (c) there is two cockroaches associated ectoparasites identified as Dermatophagoides spp (common name: house dust mites). This particular ectoparasites is a known causative agent of asthma and allergies among humans. It is recommended that the Department of Health (DOH) in collaboration with the Local Government Unit (LGU) and various Barangays in Davao City should collaborate with each other in conducting risk assessment regarding on the proliferation of cockroaches carrying ectoparasites. In addition, the conduct of information dissemination through forums and seminars regarding food hygiene and environmental sanitation practices among vendors and stall owners in Bankerohan and Matina public market is also highly recommended.en_US
