| dc.description.abstract | Drug addiction is currently one of the serious problems affecting youth worldwide. Mothers of adolescents with substance abuse problems experience significant distress because of the adolescent’s behaviors. The study provides insights into the lives of mothers with substance user children. A qualitative approach was adopted using a multiple case study method complemented by in-depth interviews validated by affirmants. The results of the study revealed that the experiences of mothers with substance use children were Difficulties, Stress, and Challenges in Motherhood and Shame and Judgement from society. However, the coping mechanism of mothers were Communicating and Connecting and Disciplining in Various Ways. Thus, mothers provide insights into giving more love, understanding, guidance, and communication because the more challenges, the more it tested motherhood. The result implies that social workers, to evaluate and strengthen the current anti-drug programs and services, must understand the nature of the mothers’ experiences, be aware of their challenges and be familiar with their coping mechanisms to address the mothers’ needs. Moreover, social workers may work with NGOs and Local Government Units to assist parents of substance users in changing their lifestyles. Hence, not just parents, but most importantly, the substance user. A grassroots anti-drug campaign, such as Barangay Anti-Drug Campaign, is essential in minimizing and monitoring drug use. This may make the youth improve their lives and transform into better people, and continue to employ medical professionals, counselors, and psychologists to assist drug users in getting therapy for their addiction. | en_US |
