dc.description.abstractThis study is entitled Presence of Slang Words in Social Media Posts: A Semantic Analysis which aims to know the teenager‘s insights in utilizing slang in their social media posts and what are its different meanings. An in-depth interview (IDI) and focus-group discussion (FGD) was conducted to 14 teenagers, 7 for in-depth interviews and 7 for focus group. The respondents were currently a student in different schools in Davao Region. We collected twenty-one pieces of data from research question number one, as well as three themes that arose from the findings for research question number two and three themes for research question number three. The data obtained from the study was coded and analyzed using the data reduction, thematic analysis, drawing conclusions and verification. The analyzing of data from research number one showed that the acronym, abbreviation, coinage and sward speak type of slang are used frequently by the participants. It seems that they are familiar with these sorts of slang. In terms of the participant‘s insights in using slang, happiness, improve vocabulary skills, use as an interactive tool, freedom of expressions, comfortable in interacting with friends, and affects the academic writing skills are the six key themes that emerged during the interviews. The causes of their utilization of slang words are due to the increased usage of the internet in recent years, or they could be due to social media, which plays the most significant role in this situation. In summary, slang is an essential element of adolescent communication. It provides teenagers a sense of identity as a young person with a unique way of expressing themselves. Slangs are language and culturally unique, although they are frequently passed down from one culture and language to another.en_US
