Teaching english in the milieu of new normal: teachers' stories of teaching strategies

Abstract

This study examined the teaching strategies that the teachers used in teaching English in the new normal of education in the Philippines. This study aims to help teachers and future teachers by giving them information about the different teaching experiences and strategies as what the researchers will gather in the results of this study. The pandemic pushed the education system to shift to a different mode of learning which are online learning and modular learning. The selection of the respondents of the study are all English teachers with at least 3 years of experience, who are currently teaching in the new normal setting. 10 English teachers will participate as respondents for the In-depth interviews while 5 English teachers will participate in the focused group discussion. A researcher-made interview guide questionnaire will be used as the tool to gather results which will be used to determine the themes and patterns or participants‟ insights and experiences. Various essential themes have emerged in the results of the study when the participants were asked about their experiences and strategies used. These are the use of modules, following a schedule, foresight of workload, utilization of technology, objective oriented, open-line to stakeholders, resiliency, peer support, student autonomy and such as seen on the discussion of the results of the study. The findings of this study were credibly gathered from the teachers who teach both virtual and modular learning, the researchers highly recommend that further study may be conducted to determine the effectiveness of different teacher‟s strategies which is suitable to be applied in the new normal way of teaching.
