dc.description.abstract | Beetles are ecologically important indicator species in an agroecosystem. However, these species are poorly studied in the remote areas of Mindanao, Philippines. This study was carried out to identify species of beetles and determine species richness, abundance, and diversity in an agroecosystem of New Bataan, Davao De Oro. Quadrat sampling was made using pitfall traps, beat sheeting, and hand-picking methods along a transect line. There are 294 individuals identified from the Coleoptera order that has a total of 18 species belonging to the family Curculionidae, Chrysomelidae, Scarabaeidae, Anthicidae, Passalidae, and Histeridae. The most abundant species encountered is Metapocyrtus spp. representing 32.75% of all individuals identified followed by Chrysolina sp. (31.88%) Results showed a low biodiversity through analysis of Margarlef’s index (1.656), Shannon-Weiner’s diversity index (H’=1.799), Simpson diversity index (D=0.7722), and evenness (E=0.6046) in the study area. Understanding the complex ecology of beetle species and other insects is crucial in the agroecosystem. Farming techniques should be sustainable to support and sustain a biodiversity-friendly farming system such as organic farming, improved shade tree management, and reduction and withdrawal from harmful pesticides. | en_US |
