The role of information technology on the performance of accounting students at UM Tagum College

Abstract

In a world where technological innovations are evolving at a faster rate, it is vital to examine how well this technology affects the accounting profession in the same manner that it has affected every facet of humanity's daily life (Ramaj, 2014). Teaching students about information technology will help them enhance their analytical, logical thinking, and practical expertise. This research aims to evaluate the role of information technology on the performance of accounting students at UM Tagum College. This research is imparted in a quantitative approach using non-experimental research design. The result of this study will provide a valuable data and information about the significant role of information technology to the accounting students. 230 students of UM Tagum College with a random sampling distribution were selected to be the respondents of this study. Consequently, to determine the extent of utilizing information technology, the following indicators were used: tracking and recording financial transactions, preparing and presenting financial information, computerized accounting systems, and accounting software systems. Overall, these indicators obtained a mean score of 4.03 and a standard deviation of 0.91, indicating a high descriptive equivalent. This means that accounting students were using information technology to enhance academic productivity. Therefore, institution should give more emphasis to accounting software systems to be utilized by students in acquiring knowledge in accounting education. In addition, adjunct accounting software knowledge and skills can provide recent college graduates with a significant advantage. Finally, other indicators may be used for additional research related to this study.
