In the advent of hyper-connectivity and the mass production of digital materials,
time allotment for reading can be affected. Thus, urged the researches to know the
reading habits of college students studying social studies where reading is one of the
essential skills students must possess as most of the shared knowledge in the
discipline comes from reading materials. Using a descriptive survey, the reading
habits of college students studying social studies were measured based on the
frequency or the time they spend in reading, the material they are reading and the
category online they choose to read. The findings of this study revealed that the
majority of the students spends 4-6 hours reading for the entire week. Result also
shows that students mostly read newspapers and articles about politics among other
reading materials. Moreover, the survey also stipulates that students read
journal/articles online more frequently than other online reading materials.
Furthermore, the study also shows that students are reading more about education,
entertainment, news, and sports. Overall, the study shows that students still allot time
in reading and are reading relevant materials towards social studies discipline.
