Perceptions of Senior High School Students on English Only Policy

Abstract
The study focused on determining the level of perception of senior high students when analyzed by gender. The study employed a quantitative descriptive design utilizing correlation technique. The respondents were 19 Grade 11 and 31 Grade 12 from the private High School in Davao for the School Year 2018-2019 chosen through stratified random sampling. The statistical tools used in the study were Mean and T-Test. The findings of the study revealed that students perceived, that English only policy can help them: develop their English-speaking skills, express their feelings easily, and can improve their grammar. Some of the problems encountered by the senior high students were having a hard time understanding the content whenever their teacher speaks in English, being frightened whenever they speak English in front of the class because they can’t speak in English because their family members uses native language at home. Students perceived that on the category of interventions that interventions on learning English plays an important part in learning English language, that it can greatly help them to be more familiar with such language. Students’ starts reading books written in English, watch foreign movies, and used internet as a source of learning English. One of the most significant factors is that they are determined to learn the English language. Keywords: Perception, English only policy, Benefits, Problems Encountered, Interventions
