Abstract
This action research study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of using visual arts-based instruction in fostering understanding of arithmetic sequence. The problem addressed in the study are the difficulties encountered by the students in understanding the problem in finding the nth term and finding the sum of the given arithmetic sequence;specifically, in remembering and manipulating the formula, understanding the topic and analyzing the problem in order to show a concrete solution. The participants in this study were exposed to three teaching sessions using visual arts instruction. Prior to the implementation of instructional plan, most of the participants scored below average. On the implementation period, the students actively participated and showed positive response during the teaching and learning process. After three teaching sessions using visual arts instruction, the participants scored higher in the post-test than the previous scores wherein they reached more than the average score. The results of this study implied that using visual arts instruction helped students understand mathematical concepts, foster longer retention, and increase analysis level.
