This 2024 paper by Analyn A. Cabras and co-authors reports the discovery of two new weevil species of the genus Metapocyrtus (family Curculionidae) from Mindanao, Philippines. The study describes Metapocyrtus hamiguitan from the Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary and Metapocyrtus mranaw from Lanao del Sur. It provides detailed morphological descriptions, illustrations, and comparisons with closely related species. The paper also discusses the complex and still unresolved classification of Metapocyrtus, highlights the high level of endemism in the Philippines, and emphasizes the importance of Mindanao’s forests as key habitats for biodiversity, despite ongoing environmental threats.en_US
Two new species of Metapocyrtus Heller from Mindanao Islands are described and illustrated: Metapocyrtus hamiguitan sp. nov., and Metapocyrtus mranaw sp. nov. Metapocyrtus hamiguitan sp. nov. is named after its type locality, Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary, while Metapocyrtus mranaw sp. nov. is named after the Mranaw (o) tribe of Lanao. Notes on the taxonomy of the novel species are also presented in this paper.en_US
